The Essence

Anastasia Ramlall

Born in Mauritius to a Russian mother and a Mauritian father, I grew up by the beach, in a culturally rich society where several languages were spoken every day.

My approach to fashion is very personal. Fashion is self-expression and identity: I create unique pieces I want to wear myself, always with my clients in mind.

An island palette

Colours of my island

The cultures and colours of Mauritius shape everything I design: the turquoise of the ocean, the greens of the casuarinas along the beach and of the sugarcane fields, the golden orange of the sunsets from my home.

As a kitesurfer and keen swimmer, I am sensitive to colour, and it shows in my fabrics: vibrant colours, fluid to the touch. Art, architecture and design inspire me too.

The collection

Made for every woman

The Anastasia Ramlall collection is elegant, chic and universally flattering, with signature cuts. It began with resort wear, from day to evening, and has grown with a workwear capsule for an effortlessly chic wardrobe and a Holistic capsule for yoga and sport, in cotton jersey made from yarn to fabric in Mauritius.

I want every woman to find her perfect match, so I design a wide variety of models, with care for every age and body. Shorts, kaftans, day and evening wear: all designed as capsule collections that I keep refining.

Beginnings

From model to designer

I fell in love with fashion when I won a modelling competition at seventeen. I travelled as a model and began drawing sketches to design my own clothes.

I started small, with a few designs sold to the boutiques of luxury hotels in Mauritius. Fashion is now my passion and my art, and the brand has become recognisable for its own identity.

Looking at a fabric and touching its texture brings designs to life. Sometimes I imagine the design first, then look for the fabric on my travels.

Fabric first

The search for the perfect textile

Quality and the beauty of the fabric come first. I travel across Asia, to India, Hong Kong and China, and source fabrics from South Korea and Japan: silk, quality viscose, linen, Tencel, cotton. Every print is laser-printed for the truest colours.

I draw every design myself; the prototypes are made by ateliers, some of which work for me as their main client. Owning my boutique and meeting my clients shows me what they love, and the collection adapts quickly. Anticipation and reaction are my model.

Vision

Next, the world’s resort cities

After growing a presence in the luxury hotels of Mauritius, my next ambition is to take the collection abroad, to niche resort cities around the world, while keeping what defines it: personal, eclectic in prints and colours, and made to be worn.
